A science fiction book for the ages!

Review by Yacine Seck, written Jan. 21st 2021

Book: Providence
Genre: Science-Fiction
Author: Max Barry
Rating: 8/10

This book is probably my favorite book of 2020.

It is about a group of astronauts going into space on an AI controlled ship. It’s set very far in the future, where most people live on stations outside of Earth. There was not a lot of background information given, but the story is well thought out and the plot is interesting. The astronauts have a mix of social issues as well as psychological issues and the book is mostly them navigating it while trying to complete their mission. However they have to fight off these advanced beings that keep evolving after each encounter.

Each chapter is from a different person’s point of view, but it does not get confusing or annoying which I really appreciated. Although it took a few chapters for me to warm up to all the characters, by the end of the book you really appreciate all their roles. I would have liked better development in the characters and the lore to be more evenly spread out rather than jammed at the end, but I still really liked the book and will read it again.
