Oakland Public Library staff are frequently out in the community, providing extensive outreach services and programs. We have a fleet of Bike Libraries; these are nimble outreach vehicles – bike powered bookmobiles – which allow for additional programming support for such outreach efforts by supporting online library card registrations, materials check-out, and demonstrations of online services such as ebooks and databases.

The first OPL Bike Library 1.0 was designed by local builder, Kick Trailer in late summer, 2013. It features two sides of cascading bookshelves to display books face-out while in motion, a custom shelf for a Bluetooth speaker, and the pyramid structure itself opens up for storage and load carrying capacity. OPL Bike Libraries 2.0 and 3.0 were made possible by a generous grant from the Friends of the Oakland Public Library and were designed in early 2016; these are smaller and are able to pass through regular doorways.
Please contact Mana Tominaga, Main Supervising Librarian, at 510-238-6611 or firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in hosting one of the OPL Bike Libraries at your upcoming event!
